The machines found me I did not find them. I am a machine learning (ML) scientist and have been since the early stages of my Ph.D. work when I began developing novel feature-selection algorithms. Curiously, this work was referred to by me and my colleagues as signal processing, presumably because I approached the field of ML from an engineering perspective instead of one of statistics or computer science. It was only after joining a research team that was applying ML to predict crime in Chicago that I learned I had been working in the field of ML all along. The machines and their vast intelligence had infiltrated my life without me knowing!
